Maybe you were roped into this wacky concept by a friend you hardly know, maybe your wife dragged you along for a date, or maybe you were just bored and needed something new to try out. Now what should you expect?
If you’re new to the escape room scene, the thought of being locked into a room for sixty minutes probably seems very strange. I can understand the apprehension. You’re probably wondering what the heck you’ve agreed to do right now. Your palms are sweaty and your heart is racing. Have no fear, we’re here to save the day!
To start off, we’re going to talk about what exactly an escape room is: and that is a heavily themed, interactive environment. You, and your team that you’ve chosen, are going to be willingly locked inside for sixty minutes. You’ll be looking for clues and solving puzzles to ultimately escape. Yes, you actually have to talk to each other. If you’re still a little hazy on the whole concept, these are the tips we have for you.
So often we see teams crash and burn, due to a lack of talking to each other. Even a simple acknowledgement of each new clue found, where it was found, and how you've found it. You’d be surprised how often a team fails because another member thought it wasn’t important to share. Don’t let this happen to you!
This one is really important. Even if you think you’ve scoped out the entire room, do it again. Too many times we have missed something vital because we were so sure the spot was already checked by someone else. RECHECK YOUR TEAMMATES WORK. We’re human, we make mistakes. Check anywhere something COULD be hiding, even inside of bigger items.
We know the pressure of the countdown. It is the downfall of us all at one time or another. However, take a deep breath. Concentrate. Piece together your clues. Survey the area and start making connections. Even if it seems stupid at the time, TRY IT. You’d be surprised what works!
Every escape room is going to be different with what they allow and don’t allow. Listen to your Game Master. Following the rules are very vital in your escape.
Remember, at the end of the day, competition or not, your main goal at an escape room is to have fun! Bond with your teammates, make a joke or two, live a little. At the end of the day, you should be leaving with a smile on your face, win or lose.
